Update:

That's not hinting, by the way, just good old geekly object lust. :)

I want
a) either my old digital camera to work or
b) to get a new one and

a palm.

[identity profile] mewcenary.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's normally not very cost-effective to get digital cameras repaired. Depends what is wrong with it, of course. Maybe it just needs a new battery?

What sort of Palm were you thinking of?

[identity profile] philipstorry.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
She wants something like my T3, although I suspect a simple Tungsten T would suffice...

Basically, something shiny and sleek.

This has nothing to do with having seen my T3, of course. ;-)

Digital Cameras

I agree that it may not be cost effective to get a digital camera thats older than a couple of years old repaired as chances are you'll be able to buy a better quality digital camera for less than getting your old one repairing.

If I plan on buying the lighter replacement for the Canon Powershot A70 later this year I'll let you know.

Firstly, stop using the "less than" symbol, as it fucks up on LJ ;)

Secondly, EMACS IS EVIL AND VI IS THE ONE TRUE EDITOR SO I CAST THEE DOWN!

[identity profile] clarisinda.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not aware of ever having used EMACS, but VI is really evil. I hate it.

[identity profile] mewcenary.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You may have converted me to Dominos Pizza, but you would never be able to turn me against my previous vi.

[identity profile] clarisinda.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If I could be bothered I'm sure I'd manage it. But I don't care that much...

[identity profile] eponymousarchon.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't, I use '& lt' (only wihtout the space)

[identity profile] mewcenary.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
.. which is not valid HTML. You need the semicolon after it, you amateur. For example: <

[identity profile] eponymousarchon.livejournal.com 2005-03-10 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Bah! I'm blaming Internet Explorer then for accepting invalid HTML. :/

I did wonder why people were discussing semicolons earlier ;)

[identity profile] fluffymormegil.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*ahem* THOU SHALT TERMINATE THY HTML ENTITIES WITH A SEMICOLON!
This stentorian bellow brought to you by the Campaign For Real HTML.

[identity profile] eponymousarchon.livejournal.com 2005-03-10 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
<grins> I'm blaming IE for leading me astray into the path of invalid HTML ;)

Nice. I can see why you'd want something in that vein.

Now, onto business. George, you're a nice guy. But this Emacs thing... Well, basically, stop it. You're already running one OS. Just leave it at that. For heaven's sake, let's wean you off EMACS, before you start running it in a UNIX session running in VMWare running on a Windows box. This multiple OS thing just escalates, and before you know it you're mainlining the hard stuff like mainframe hardware virtualisation. And we care about you too much to let you do that.

Try going back to basics. Have you considered using COPY CON for a while, for instance?

[identity profile] eponymousarchon.livejournal.com 2005-03-10 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, back when was coding in Ada on Solaris I *was* a total emacs junkie!

While running Unit Testing for the customer as part of acceptance testing, I once did get clapped and cheered for getting *all* the different files on screen (splitting windows) at once! And all the time I was doing this, a quick ESC-ESC-kettle-power-on caused emacs to make me a nice cup of coffee, just how I liked it!

Vi doesn't do that! ;)

[identity profile] villagecretin.livejournal.com 2005-03-11 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I may be looking into this way to deeply here, so apologies in advance.

I remember using my Dad's 16 Mhz 386 Amstrad er 'luggable'. I managed to not only get MS Word 6a for windows to run but also to print from it a colour A4 poster on only 2MB RAM. Yes it took 2 sodding hours to print out that page. The rulebooks said it couldn't be done - but I did it because I was arrogant enough at the time that I wanted to prove it was achievable.

I spent part of the first 3 years of my degree (alas it took 5 years to actually get it in the end) from 1992-1995 trying to make the DIGITAL VAX minicomputers usable by writing DCL scripts. After 3 years I'd become in the top 10 students across Uni on VAX DCL.
Then doomsday. We moved email on to a windows front end and my skills were no longer needed since very few people were using accounts on the VAX mini computers.

George has spent too much of his life learning OS's which are now no longer main stream and which most people would wish were burnt rather than buried. He simply doesn't want to let go off that skill base. If his current PC will let him run 4 OS's/ emulators/ sessions (call it what you may) and it makes him happy I feel he should be allowed to in moderation. The only issue is the fact everyone else knows him better than I do who has made a comment on his LJ, and feels he needs to be cured of the inevitable

Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis
(The times change and we change with the times)

George doesn't want to or wishes to let EMACS die as long as he can still get his fix so to speak.

The real issue is when he can no longer get that fix, which is what I sense, is what everyone else is concerned about.

Alas George that day will come when the old equipment will die. Yes you may be able to get an EMACS emulator to run on a single computer, but will it give you the same thrill of running a session or multiple sessions on a remote minicomputer, I doubt it.

I know it’s a harsh thing to tell you, but at some point in the future you will need to reduce your EMACS dependency – if for only for everyone else’s sanity. We will all try and support you through the bereavement when the day finally comes when the last machine running EMACS gets switched off. It’s just that it will make it also easier all round if you were less dependent on this particular OS when that day comes.

Can I start again on this one!

I feel that if George has his way we'd be all writing CV's using EDLIN rather than using word processors.

Yes you can still do it even on Windows XP Pro, and on windows 2003 server (a quick check on the Microsoft site says you can still do it) but most of us would sooner use something a little easier such as notepad.
