Date: 2005-03-10 11:01 am (UTC)While running Unit Testing for the customer as part of acceptance testing, I once did get clapped and cheered for getting *all* the different files on screen (splitting windows) at once! And all the time I was doing this, a quick ESC-ESC-kettle-power-on caused emacs to make me a nice cup of coffee, just how I liked it!
Vi doesn't do that! ;)

Date: 2005-03-11 02:23 pm (UTC)I remember using my Dad's 16 Mhz 386 Amstrad er 'luggable'. I managed to not only get MS Word 6a for windows to run but also to print from it a colour A4 poster on only 2MB RAM. Yes it took 2 sodding hours to print out that page. The rulebooks said it couldn't be done - but I did it because I was arrogant enough at the time that I wanted to prove it was achievable.
I spent part of the first 3 years of my degree (alas it took 5 years to actually get it in the end) from 1992-1995 trying to make the DIGITAL VAX minicomputers usable by writing DCL scripts. After 3 years I'd become in the top 10 students across Uni on VAX DCL.
Then doomsday. We moved email on to a windows front end and my skills were no longer needed since very few people were using accounts on the VAX mini computers.
George has spent too much of his life learning OS's which are now no longer main stream and which most people would wish were burnt rather than buried. He simply doesn't want to let go off that skill base. If his current PC will let him run 4 OS's/ emulators/ sessions (call it what you may) and it makes him happy I feel he should be allowed to in moderation. The only issue is the fact everyone else knows him better than I do who has made a comment on his LJ, and feels he needs to be cured of the inevitable
Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis
(The times change and we change with the times)
George doesn't want to or wishes to let EMACS die as long as he can still get his fix so to speak.
The real issue is when he can no longer get that fix, which is what I sense, is what everyone else is concerned about.
Alas George that day will come when the old equipment will die. Yes you may be able to get an EMACS emulator to run on a single computer, but will it give you the same thrill of running a session or multiple sessions on a remote minicomputer, I doubt it.
I know it’s a harsh thing to tell you, but at some point in the future you will need to reduce your EMACS dependency – if for only for everyone else’s sanity. We will all try and support you through the bereavement when the day finally comes when the last machine running EMACS gets switched off. It’s just that it will make it also easier all round if you were less dependent on this particular OS when that day comes.
Can I start again on this one!
Date: 2005-03-11 02:50 pm (UTC)Yes you can still do it even on Windows XP Pro, and on windows 2003 server (a quick check on the Microsoft site says you can still do it) but most of us would sooner use something a little easier such as notepad.
