How *do* you politely explain that the last company you worked for full-time was asset-stripped and no longer *exists* for references in any meaningful form?

-- Even the Wayback Machine couldn't find any traces of its old website. :/

My last company went under too.

I managed to get one of the people I work with to give me a reference and I have a written reference, but basically I spent a while explaining at interviews what happened.
