Jacqui Smith: "Our country has a proud tradition of individual freedom. This involves freedom from unjustified interference by the State. But it also includes freedom from interference by those who would do us harm."

"The government is responsible for protecting both types of freedom."

Well, you're doing a bang-up job of protecting the former.

I just don't get how we could *possibly* have survived active bombing campaigns (ie: Real, non-imaginary, non-FUD) by PIRA given the level of paranoia and loss of freedoms and privacy that the current situation seems to demand.

Oh right, that was real, not an extercise in FUD and power-grabbing.

Ironic that the reputedly harshest Conservative government in the country weren't nearly as authoritarian as New Labour, isn't it?

I know. It's scary.

I might join the Green Party. Not sure what good it would do, but *shrug*

I know what you mean - the two major parties are as bad as each other. Barring a bloody revolution, I don't see what the valid 3rd option is...

Actually - the threat of revolution *would* explain why the current government is on an erosion of liberties trip. Think Gordon and Jacqui saw the screen(*) adaptation of V For Vendetta and got scared?

(*) Somehow I don't see them being culturally aware enough to be aware of the graphic novel. Otherwise it'd be banned.
